The Climate Crisis is a Racist Crisis’: Structural Racism, Inequality, and Climate Change

Given the relatively recent emergence of climate change as a matter of mainstream concern, the connections between climate change, structural racism and development are less well established. This book chapter begins with a discussion of the uneven distribution of the impacts of climate change, focusing on the Caribbean region. The chapter then considers the inadequacies of existing governance responses that contribute to and reinforce forms of structural racism within a climate regime where Black lives matter less. The chapter concludes by identifying routes for forms of climate justice.
