Black Femme Wellbeing & Leadership Coordinator
Buffy Illum is the Black Femme Wellbeing & Leadership Coordinator for the Chisholm Legacy Project.
After completing a BA in Cultural Anthropology and minor in Global Peace and Security from UC Santa Barbara, her passion for human rights and equitable development led her to pursue graduate studies in Denmark. She completed a Master of Public Policy in International Development Studies from Aalborg University that included internships at the Danish Institute for Human Rights in Copenhagen and the UN’s International Labor Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
While living in Denmark for more than a decade, Illum worked to promote women’s and people of color’s human rights in health care, the private sector and volunteerism as a speaker and consultant developing tools and programs based on participatory research. Since returning to her home state of Maryland, Illum has enjoyed working behind-the-scenes supporting local femme and people of color led non-profits and causes at the intersection of earth and people care.
